Further significant developments occurred under King Fahd in 1988. The western side of the mosque was expanded, and escalators were installed for better accessibility. Central air conditioning systems were introduced, along with advanced audio systems and improved water supply networks. The mosque’s total area increased to over 366,000 square meters, enabling a capacity of about 820,000 worshippers. This era also saw aesthetic enhancements with the use of gold, crystal, and fine granite.
